THE FINAL BROWNS GAME AT THREE RIVERS STADIUM - WELL, ALMOST

UK fans 1993 trip to Cleveland

This ticket is for the last Browns game at Three Rivers Stadium before Mr. Modell moved his team to Baltimore.

Before the game, Browns' fans handed out leaflets (shown in the bottom left corner of this page) requesting all fans attending the game to turn their backs away from the field immediately after kickoff.

Needless to say, not many Steeler fans did this. Although we were sad to be losing our great rivals, it just didn't seem right to turn away from the field.

Fans were also asked to wear orange arm bands, but not many followed up on that one either. Moral support was plentiful. Pittsburgh's mayor, Tom Murphy, was very vocal with his support.

The final game saw the Steelers dominate their opponents once again. I remember the gentleman sitting next to me saying, "Watch this guy!" every time a young man called Kordell Stewart got the ball.

When the Steelers failed to make any progress with two running plays from the two yard line, Stewart lined up in shotgun formation. Neil O'Donnell was wide left. After taking the snap, Stewart scrambled desperately before throwing his first pass, a 2 yard touchdown completion to Ernie Mills in the first quarter, to give the Steelers their first points of the night and Stewart's first NFL touchdown.

This Steelers' victory took their record against the Browns in Three Rivers Stadium to 23-4. To check out the complete regular season record of their rivalry, please click on the Cleveland Help leaflet on the left.

I'll always remember this trip for the snow. We had to drive from Pittsburgh to Buffalo to catch our flight back to London and the weather conditions were terrible. It was only the second time I had driven in the snow - but the first with a bus load of people. The conditions were bad all the way up I79, but we managed it with just half an hour to spare thanks to New York State having cleared all the snow from the roads.
